This week was Greece so I decided to make a common street food eaten in Greece. The chicken was marinated in garlic and lemon juice for two hours, put on kebabs and grilled. They turned out great. The picture below shows them after they were taken of the kebabs because I forgot to take a picture before hand.

Creole/ Cajun is a popular type of food in Louisiana. The creole people were descended from people who lived in the area during the French/Spanish rule of the Louisiana. The food is known for having rich flavors and is typically spicy. This week I made red beans and rice, a beloved creole dish.

Week 3 was India. A very common type of art India is the mandala. They use these to meditate and relax, so I decided to decorate my clipboard with them. As you can see in the picture to the right, these pictures have in depth detail. Although mine are not as nice as the monks who make them with sand in India, but it still looks rather pretty. |
For week two, I was in charge of the cooking. The country was Japan and I wanted to attempt making sushi.
Big. Mistake.
I picked a tempura roll recipe seeing as I don't like cooked fish, so why would I want it raw? The recipe I picked was for a roll with fried shrimp, avocado, cum cumber wrapped in sushi rice and seaweed; it sounded rather easy. I started with boiling Jasmine rice, the rice you would get a Chinese restaurant that has that signature smell. The issues started to occur when I started to fry my shrimp. They were not going out as crispy and good looking as the recipe creator's, but I figured it would be okay because they still tasted good. I got all my veggies cut, having a little issue with the cucumber but surprisingly, it went well with avocado (and it was my first time cutting one). Then, i got my rolling mat out and placed the seaweed sheet down, then put the rice down and then started to place my other filling. I started to roll it thinking it was going well. I pulled out the long roll and went to cut it. EVERYTHING FELL OUT. MY ROLL LOOKED LIKE SOMETHING A TWO YEAR OLD MADE OUT OF PLAY DOUGH. Then, i went to taste it. Everything was wrong: the avocado didn't taste right, the shrimp were bland. The good thing was the sushi rice. Overall, it was a disaster. I'm happy that I took on the challenge, but I will be leaving making sushi to the masters.

Hello and welcome to my first blog post on Cooking with a Twist. This Genius Hour project is meant to help us develop cooking and art skills. Everyone knows that cooking and art go hand and hand. Some might even say cooking is its own art form, which I agree with. Food in itself is beautiful. Each week, we will highlight a different culture around the world, particularly ones we are not familiar with.
Our first culture Korea. I had issues getting the materials for this week so I am behind on the art aspect of this region. I will be making it us as soon as possible.
I was responsible for the information portion this week, and I thought Korea was a very interesting place to learn about. You kind find this information on the Cultures Around the World tab.
